Hey guys, trying to change my water pump, its an 86 25 hp johnson and i have removed the one nut, 4 bolts, and screens. I have seperated the brass nuts inside of screens ,leaving the bottom one alone as told, and removed the plastic black clip exposed after seperating these two brass nuts. I expected the shift rod to come up high enough for me to slide the top brass nut off the linkage when put into forward gear but it did not, and I can not get the lower end to come off.

I'm not sure what I need to do to persuade this lower end off. I've tried taps witha rubber mallett, no luck... I'm not sure if the top brass bolt is stopping the removal (is this piece's removal vital to sliding the lower end off?) or if theres something else, but here is the pic of the linkage, hopefully this shows my problem.

Is there still a bolt under the trim tab?

Does it come down any at all? If not, the stud that you took the nut off of probably is siezed in the upper casting. Lots of fun when that happens. One nut and four bolts and the shift rod are all that is required.

Just looked at it again, and yes, it does seem siezed, the prop side comes down a tad but where the stud you are mentioning is does not budge. I just sprayed easy out on it, hopefully its safe on my seals... any suggestions on how to unseize them? heat maybe? I know the trim tabs can't take much of a beating even from a rubber mallett.

Break out the heat to try and get that stud in the front loose. It's a bi##ch.

Yes, heat the aluminum around the stud. A wedge on top of the stud if practical. The paint is burned off mine, so I know what you are facing.

Don't beat on it with that mallet---it won't help a bit, and probably will wind up breaking something. The gearcase is heavier than the mallet and it isn't going to move it.

With the nut off of the top of the stud install a knock off nut and then either use a hammer or air gun to vibrate the stud while heating.
