Re: removing lower unit

right after i posted the last one about pb blaster, i asked why did i do, i coulda gone on line check it my self. which i did. thanks for responding to it anyways. anyhow i was gooleing on how to remove lower unit for 45hp mariner and this came up. I'm trying to replace impeller (89 mariner 45hp) and my question is do i have to remove shift pin before lower unit will drop?
So far I remove 5 bolts total but seem like something ios holding back. Shift linkage towards engine has a pin going into this mechanism and i was wonder if that has to come out before lower unit will drop
..: some else responsed yes to this question. does this apply to my 87 mariner also? if so where? i looked all over but can't locate this pin. need some pics or skeck. i will take some pics of the gap on my engine and post it 2morrow, its dark outside already..

Re: removing lower unit

Assuming we're still speaking about the 4cyl Mariner per s/n OB2..... circa 1987.

There is nothing to remove or disconnect up top. All fasteners that need to be removed are at the bottom, on the lower unit.

Drive shaft is slide fit, splined into the bottom of the crankshaft up top.

Shift shaft is slide fit, splined and meets the shift rod inside the mid-section housing.

Highlighted the speedo tube I was mentioning earlier. It may or may not be connected on your motor, but could be tie-wrapped somewhere out of the way making removal difficult. Its rubber tubing, so you woudl feel elastic resistance.

Good luck. Look forward to your pic.

Re: removing lower unit

Before you go drilling holes........... Turn the motor on it's head and spray the PB Blaster onto the shaft!. It will run down into the motor/shaft connection. Also while up side down, see if you can get the half inch gap back. There may be enough room to slide a piece of wood in there and smack the shaft a bit. Another thought.. although more involved, is to unbolt the powerhead, wedge that apart and add more penetrating oil there. At least you are closer to the connection.

Re: removing lower unit

Shift the unit if it seems to be binding it's stuck on the shiftshaft if it shifts freely check the prop to see if it's shifting there, to tell if it's stuck on the driveshaft of the shiftshaft. If it's stuck on the driveshaft move the unit up and down to help misplace what ever is holding it, when the unit is stuck on the driveshaft the up and down motion should help to free it. I would think that if it is stuck on the shiftshaft you would have pulled the clip off the shaft by now and the unit would be down with the shiftshaft stuck in the upper shaft.

Re: removing lower unit

:p::DHORRAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! I did it, it finally came apart!!!!!!!!!. the key is not to give up. being persistance will get the job done. heres how i did it: when you get a gap about the size of mine (see pics posted) 1/2 inch start prying LIGHTLY (with caution!!!! not to crack anything) all around until you can't any more threads on the 2 bolts on the side. then you wiggle forward , back ward, side to side and eventuallyit will come off. i want to thank verybody for the advices and input, especially AMD Rules and Laddies. i don't think i coulda done it without all the help. again thank you. :D:cool:

Re: removing lower unit

Glad to hear you finally got it off. Let's hope you can get that cooling problem solved and get back on the water again.

Cheers.

Re: removing lower unit

What is the condition of the pump housing, and base plates? Rather than buy a complete kit, you might be able to replace only the impeller (much cheaper). All depends on the wear noted during dis-assembly.

You had an overheating problem.... was the impeller damaged, or intact?

Re: removing lower unit

i was thinking of replacing the whole pump including the housing. the rubber seal on the top housing could use a new one. the fins on the impellor is damaged but still intact. last year it was shooting out steamming hot water but when i start the engine this year before i took it apart nothing came out. is this another prblem and not the water pump/impellor? is there a an upper water pump because when i was searching for the whole kit yesterday they have an item listed as "upper water pump kit".
