removing old lettering

Whats the easiest way to remove old boat name lettering and glue from the transom? And once I do, should I use a compound to to match the old color to the new? I am going to rename it, and, I will be going through the boat renaming process to keep Neptune happy, and retain my good luck.

Start with a heat gun...<br />Clean off the adhesive residue with goof off, d-limonene, or some other adhesive remover...<br />elbow grease and polishing compound will help to restore the gloss and make the "ghost" of the old letters less visible...
