Purchased an older fiberglass boat, scraped all the old hull id letters from the hull. But there is still the shadow of the old letters there. Tried goo b gone, green scratchy pad, alcohol, but the shadows remain. Am I stuck with it like that are is there some secret home remedies?

That shadow is the original finish of the boat the letters protected that from the sun. Try buffing around them but you may end up doing the whole boat.

I had the same issue a number of years ago..3M makes a nice compound /polish that should take care of the issue, you will have to do the whole hull.

If the #s have been on there long enough, they may never fully be removed. The protected gelcost under them hasnt changed and everything else around them has. Seen even a moderately aggressive wet sanding that didnt make the halos fully disappear......

Right. As bcurt said, the uncovered gelcoat has worn. To get the 'shadow' of the old name off my boat I'd have to re-gelcoat the transom. I live with it instead.
