My 16ft 1961 merrell wood boat (Portland,OR)
needs to have the paint removed from the whole bottom of the boat, I want to use a brush on paint remover but i don't know whats under the paint (fiberglass or what) There is a green tint clear coat and then plywood, I do not see any fibergass sheets (what kind or paint remover I use?) Also I would like to turn the boat over(700 lbs)or should I work it on the trialer and mover it back and fourth.
This boat was refinshed in Seattle about 15 years ago?

Why do you want to Remove All the Paint,..???....

If it's Still Stuck to the substrate,... There's Absolutely No Reason to Remove it..........

Sand it Out,+ Repaint it Whatever you Choose.....

IF it's glass over wood,... The Fibers may Not be visible........
Either Way,........ I've never seen a Chemical Paint Remover that'll bother Fiberglass,.....Ever....

A 700lb. boat Should be Flipable,.... If you've got Enough Friends.............
Roll it off the trailer,+ Onto blocking.........

A product called "Peel Away Marine Stripper" is safe on wood and fiberglass.

Like Bondo said, take the boat off the trailer, flip it, then set it on blocks or a dolly that is high enough to save your back while working on the boat.

I used a spray on stripper on my wood boat - it worked pretty well, but it was a TON of work - you're going to be hurting.. :)

I got the stripper at Home Depot - I think it was the only spray on kind they had.

A couple of notes though - the paint you're taking off may contain lead - that means wear a respirator approved for lead paint removal and watch out for people in your work area.

Also, don't let the paint stripper get on your skin - it hurts!

Good luck!
