removing powerhead

i am trying to remove the powerhead on my 1990 200hp j200txes . however it will not budge . all 11 nuts and bolts are removed . the chainfall lifted the entire boat off the ground. is this much difficulty common? any suggestion anyone? thanks in advance<br /> dwight

Dwight,<br /> I,(and others I'm sure) would highly reccommend a repair manual for the work you are performing.There are certain steps and procedures you should follow to prevent damage and ease dis-assembly.Too long for anyone to list here,sorry.

Do a search on this forum. There have been 2 or three discussions about just this subject over the last month or 2.<br /><br />In general stuck powerheads probably boil down to:<br />1. You didn't get all the nuts and bolts loose.<br />2. The driveshaft is frozen in the crankshaft. If you remove the lower unit beforehand you'll know if this is the problem.<br />3. Corrosion has got a death grip on the shafts of any studs or bolt shafts still in the mounting base.

I'm not sure how common it is but mine was very difficult to remove too. I rebuilt a 1975 johnson 135 and after removing all the nuts and bolts and double checking everything i got ratchet straps hooked to the rafters and all my weight (240 lbs) pushing down on it and i still couldn't break them apart. So i got my father-in-law to come over and we pushed and pulled and smacked it with a hammer and boards and finally she started breaking loose 27 yrs of corrosiong had basically glued the power head to the lower unit. It was definintly the most difficult part of working on the engine and i was sure to clean and sand the surfaces before i re-assembled it. good luck.

thanks jimd and supergenius 74 for the appropriate comments. your thinking is just as mine. if i could find a used exhaust housing adapter i would just cut it off and replace it.<br />it's the small thin adapter plate the powerhead actually sits on. part# is 398779.no longer available however. again its a 1990 200hp johnson. to reel appeal the ny yankee(the real reason the rest of the world hates americans)why you would do all the assuming you did beats me.<br />i do have the factory manual. having rebuilt my 1st v8 engine at 10 years old---and another 50 since--along with roughly 20 outboards............i'll be glad to give you any pointers the next time you need help....and are willing to admit it. <br />thanks everyone else...dwight
