Here is the issue. I bought this boat used with the merc. alpha gen. 2 and do not have the prop lock key to remove the prop lock from the prop. I went and bought a new lock kit (McGuard) to remove the old one, but the key is different and wont fit the lock. Any ideas how I can remove the lock (without the key) with out damaging the prop, shaft and seals? Thanks

Re: Removing prop lock

If you contact a McGuard dealer they may be able to help. I have removed car wheel locks by sacrificing a close fitting socket and pounding it onto the lock. That was a last resort. May not work for a boat. Good luck.

McGard can help you if you have the number of the original lock - but if you don't then I am not sure. You need to contact them if it's theirs.

There is another company that makes the locks , also.

Dkidd, If that is the kind of prop lock that just spins, you might be able to drill a hole in it and stick a pin into it to lock it up. You can use a pipe wrench to remove it.

Alternatively, you could drive a maronry nail into the space between the inner and outer and jam it up. Again the pipe wrench comes into play.

Re: Removing prop lock

I am going to see if I can see a # on the lock and try to get ahold of McGuard, see if they can send me the right key. If that doesn't materlize, then I am going to try to lock it up like Chris1956 suggests. Thanks for the help guys, I will keep you posted on the outcome.

Re: Removing prop lock

No #'s on the prop lock,...... I looked. I got in touch with McGard customer service department. I had to take a picture of my lock and e-mail it to the customer service department at McGard. Three days later and $33 (with shipping-2 day) I have the proper key. I have the prop off and ready to test out other props. Thanks to everyone that helped me out.
