IMG_1452.jpgGuys,

Stil working on that old 1985 Bayliner Contessa from last winter. I've been working on the 280 outdrive and found out during disassembly that the vertical shaft had been sheered off, in order to replace that it seems I've got to get the prop shaft out.

questions/thoughts:
1) I've removed the zink anode and just have the two large allen bolts holding the propeller bearing in. What tool should I use to remove it? Do I need to turn it couterclockwise and somehow hold what remains of the verticle shaft in place to prevent it from turning?

2) It seems crazy to me that this thing would unscrew, it seems it has no play either way (see pic) with the solid aluminum of the outdrive case.

Thanks again in advance. The manuals seem to be failing me.

-Bob

Not sure which manual you have, but here is the OEM manual. Should clear things up, if not ask, but at least you can reference where your problem is.

A hand impact screwdriver is usually needed to remove those screws. Then a slide hammer with an adapter on the end of the propshaft pulls the housing and shaft. It's all in the manual.

Don, thank you so much. I really appreciate it. One big question, does the bearing housing just "pull out" or does it have to be unscrewed? Do you have any reccomendations on slide hammers? I have an adapter and the impact drivers. I allready have the allen bolts out of the bearing housing.

Just pulls out! Applying a little heat to the sides of the bullet helps, they are a tight fit and often a little corroded too.

Most have been a pretty solid whack to shear the shaft like that. Was the splined coupler between lower and upper shafts broken as well?

Re: Removing Prop Shaft and Vertical Shaft

I'm the new owner and I'm assuming this is why the other guy sold it, not sure what he hit. Outdrive was on when I got it (got the boat as-is) and mega-pitted and such. Looked like it was treated pretty badly. I've been putting some effort into rebuilding, little by little, with the help of everyone here.

That vertical shaft was sheared right above the spined coupler.

I found a used vertical shaft on ebay, but still can't seem to get this thing out.

The bolt is off on the bottom, but since it was snapped at the top, I've got very little to larch onto to pull the thing out.

It's real hard to get heat down there, but i'm going to give it another good try tomorrow AM.
