USCG Man Overboard Switch required on older boats without one ? As of April 1 2021.

Lots of misinformation going around on this subject. The federal regulation is as follows

1. Manufacturers are required to install an engine cut-off switch on applicable boats manufactured after January 1, 2020

2. There is no requirement to retrofit a boat built prior to January 1, 2020

3. Operator is required to use the switch if one is installed

Exemptions:
1. Main helm of vessel is in an enclosed cabin
2. Boats 26’ and over

I am not too far from the Mississippi but this boat will not be used on any federal water. I have never heard of a CO or water patrol ever checking for a kill switch. If the boat were to ever be inspected the kill switch never noted, they will lose their mind that there is not a plug or drain in the boat.

I went to the USCG regulations site. Another eye opening fact on the requirements of the switch. In the Frequently Asked Questions section.........
Question # 19 of deals with a BROKEN or MISSING M O B switch. You ARE NOT required to repair the switch on a 2019 boat. The USCG does recommend you to repair it and use it.
I am guilty of believing to much WEB postings.
Both of my 1986 and 1999 Evinrude's do have the M O B switches and they work.

So the boat weighs 286 pounds, put a Mark 55 on the back it's going to fly. The trim tabs are going to be a must.

Finally confronted the part of the project I was avoiding, drilling the holes in the bow cover to hold the windshield in place. A lot of massaging to get that windshield locked down and in the side brackets. Not going to lie it took a few malt beverages and I am not done yet, some cussing too.

Well the boat is going back on the trailer getting wrapped and stored outside. I will start with the lower unit in April. The shop is needed for the ice fishing gear and 4 wheeler. It is nice to have infloor heat to dry out the portables and dark house between uses.

Pulled out the fuel tank to see what the inside looked like. I know this can with about 1 gallon of fuel in it has not been touched since 2018. The intake screen is spotless, zero varnish. no debris in the tank. All I had to do is dump the gas and clean up the outside of the can.

It cleaned up pretty nice using dawn dish soap and a scrubby.

I dumped the gas into an ice cream bucket made a newspaper wick lit it up and the newspaper had to burn to the surface of the gas before it ignited. No spunk left in it.

It's also only 2 degrees in Minnesota.......not much vaporization
