Removing shift rod?

I'm in the process of replacing the water pump on my 94 175 Ocean Runner and I was thinking about replacing the o-rings on the shift rod while I have the lower unit off. I'm just worried that something in the lower unit will fall out of place when I unscrew the rod and I wont be able to get it back in. Does anyone know if the part the rod threads into can move or will it stay in the proper position?

Take the cap off where the rod goes through, pull it up and you'll see where the rod goes. Should have no prob getting it back in.
