Good morning to everyone on a nice Sunday morning,
O.K. I have ordered a brand new complete water pump kit on-line this past week and should be here sometime this up coming week. My question is I own a 1983, 70 horsepower, model# J70ELCTE, Johnson outboard mounted on a 20 foot pontoon boat and was looking on-line at the web site below
to figure out how to disconnect the top of the shift shaft from underneath the bottom carb when I go to remove the lower leg unit to replace the water pump in the near future. On the web-site below do I remove bolt #70 or #26 under the crankcase and cylinder picture? Also, will I need to remove the bottom carb to get to it? How difficult is it to get to it and is there a trick to remove and replace it?:)

Another question to go along with this water pump replacement is does a rubber o-ring go underneath on the impeller itself, between the bottom of the impeller and the base plate? It doesn't show in the picture if it does? let me know in addition to the question in ths thread about the shift shaft removal. Thanks, Bob:)

I have a '92 and I disconnect the shift arm from the linkage on the starboard side first. I also pull the cotter clip from the shaft(right there, same side).
I take the airbox off the carbs, remove my starter and the fuel pump. Now you can see the shift shaft. Remove #26 from #98 and it will slide off the shift lever releasing the shift shaft.
There's not alot of room in there but I have a short combination wrench that works fine. Also the bolt screws in from the bottom up(pretty stupid).
Stuff a rag down in the lower cowling in case something gets dropped.
Get a manuel for the water pump. I've changed mine and don't remember how it went, only that it works.

To release the shift rod you pull the #69 & #70 (bolt/pin & washer). No need to pull a carb or anything else. Easily accessed with a 1/4" drive 3/8" wobble socket & extension. No need to remove the bolt holding the clevis.

DHADLEY,

I will take your advice and use a 1/4 inch driver ratchet and extension with a 3/8 inch swivel to remove the bolt and lockwasher #69 and #70 respectively. I am assuming that the bolt size is a 3/8 inch bolt head that is used to secure the shift shaft to the linkage underneath the bottom carb, because that is the size I will use to remove the pin/bolt with. It is also great I don't have to remove the carb or anything else to create more work for myself in the end. I want to do this in the most efficient fastest way possible. Take care, Bob:)

If your wobble socket is too flexable and flops around put a piece of electrical tape on it. It'll still move but will stay where you put it.

One more question concerning the water pump install. I noticed that there is 2 o-rings plus a large one for a total of three. I know where the large on goes, on the bottom of the water pump housing, the other one on the top of the drive shaft, but there is a third one that I am not sure about, where does this on go? Does it go on the impeller? And I also know there is 2 grommets, one for the water tube guide and the other for the top of the water pump housing. The one o-ring has me confused and I have studied the break down of the pictures and it doesn't show one going to the impeller itself. Let me know if the impeller gets an 0-ring too. I greatly appreciate it and I do have a Seloc manual and the web-site above in this thread. Thanks, Bob:)
