Hi All, Did a quick search adn really didnt find what i am looking for. If there is a post about this, please post.

Here is the link on my project. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=371911

Anyways, a few questions. I am looking to split my searay and remove the cap for ease of replacing the deck and stringers. Is it as simple as removing the rub rail, drilling the rivets, and lifting it off? or is it glued in any way?

What would I expect this cap to weigh with the windsheild attached? 17ft..... can a couple guys lift it off or not? If not, i have the equipment to left it but how fragile is it? can i put a strap front and back or will it create to much stress and damage it? should i run to 10ft 2x8s and make a lifting jig?

Also, those that can answer the above questions can probably answer these as well...... are stringers glued in place or are they just set and fiberglassed around?

and.... when fiberglassing the new deck..... can I use cloth? or is Chopped strand mat what i want? is one stronger then the other? How many layers of fiberglass and what weight do i want? Looking for a nice smooth floor to paint non-skid on later. Probably ordering everything from US Composites

thanks a bunch!

For the stringers: Both, they need to be bedded with "peanut butter" or 4200/5200 or the PL adhesive products. Then they need to be tabbed in, then glassed around. There are plenty of threads on this.

For the deck: Use CSM and cloth. Alot of guys are into woven roving too but I didn't purchase any. From what I have learned from this great resource, is that the chopped strand adds stiffness while creating a better bond b/t the sealed deck and the cloth. The cloth adds strength while making a smoother surface for your finishing non-skid. This is the best resource you can get and you will learn alot, I know I have. Good luck!

I'm sure some of us would love to see some pics.

Is it as simple as removing the rub rail, drilling the rivets, and lifting it off? or is it glued in any way? This Cap has some issues coming off. Not impossible but issue. Check out the post above.

What would I expect this cap to weigh with the windsheild attached? 150-200 lbs. 17ft..... can a couple guys lift it off or not? Two Guys should be able to handle it.
how fragile is it? Not very. If you got four guys you can Slide a couple of two by fours under it, cross ways and lift it off easy.

can i put a strap front and back or will it create to much stress and damage it? You can if you use the two by fours like this (see Pic)

should i run to 10ft 2x8s and make a lifting jig? No, 2x 4 are adequate

are stringers glued in place or are they just set and fiberglassed around? Glued and Glassed You WILL need a 4 1/2" Grinder Harbor Freight

and.... when fiberglassing the new deck..... can I use cloth? Yes or is Chopped strand mat what i want? Probably Not is one stronger then the other? Mat is stronger How many layers of fiberglass 1 should do it and what weight do i want? 6 or 7.5 oz. Looking for a nice smooth floor to paint non-skid on later. Probably ordering everything from US Composites US Composites IS a GREAT place for your products.

Good Luck with your project and send us some pics as you progress.
