I have a 1964 Merc650. I'm trying to remove the lower unit. I've removed the 5 "obvious" bolts holding it on but I can't seperat the lower unit from the rest of the outboard. I've beat on it with a rubber mallet but it still doesn't come off. I would beat on it harder, but I don't want to break anything. I would be willing to beat on it harder if I knew that I was doing it right. Any help would be appreciated.
Re: removing the lower unit

there are six bolts to get that lu off. Once removed you might need to budge it a little, by the looks of that motor. from front to back of skeg.
1. 1 nut at front of skeg.
2. 2 nuts either side of skeg
3. 2 nuts underneath cal. plate either side
4. 1 nut under trim tab.

once off gently tap with rubber mallet or budge to break the corrosive seal between LU and skeg.

Better with two people.

hope this helps.
cheers

Re: removing the lower unit

There's no plate halfway up the leg on a merc 650 that joins the gearshift as far as I'm aware-or anything apart from close fit holding the gearshift shaft to the L/U. The gearshift shaft should be splined and will separate when the L/U is dropped.

Re: removing the lower unit

I'm not sure what the 6th bolt I need to undo is. I've removed two covers from the side of the outboard. I've updated my website with pictures of the covers off. Any ideas? Tengals123, there are 4 nuts under the trim tab. That's assuming that we're talking about the same trim tab. Thanks. www.jcolby.com

Have 1973 65hp mercury outboard. Took lower unit off to repair water pump. That worked, but how do you reinstall the lower unit properly? It is always in forward gear or prop turns foward and there is no reverse or neutral.
Help
