Hello, i have an 85 trophy with a volvo 280 outdrive. i need to have some work done on the tilt motor, fork, ect....long story short i really dont have the money to tie up into fixing my tilt problems right now. What i was wondering is if it would cause a problem if i removed the reverse lock mechanism (so i could raise the prop by hand). i know if i goose it in reverse the prop would come up, but if i were to gently use reverse would it still jump out of the water. I very rarely use reverse, and need the prop raised very often. thanks for your help, joe

No problem in my opinion (and I have a 280). Then some good rope or some sort of Stainless cable to restrain the leg somewhat in reverse, clipped to the transom. DO NOT USE ANY SORT OF BUNGEE CORD OR BLACK RUBBER STRAPS.. THEY COULD STRETCH AND COME OFF AND KILL SOMEONE AT THE DOCK That said, of course the politically correct here will tell me and you the world will end as we know it if you do this, but I got along just fine for 45 years boating with bailing wire, and did all the things you are not supposed to do, and somehow survived. Too many live in a "what if" form of delusion...I live in a "so what", "What, Me Worry?" Alfred Newman from Mad Magazine form of crazy.

"if i were to gently use reverse would it still jump out of the water"
Yes it will or at least bounce putting a lot of stress on the transom.
My question is, why do you want to remove it? It is easy enough to reach under the drive and disengage it if needed. If you have to use bailing wire, use it to "wire open" the lock by tyeing it open to the drive. If you break the lock taking it off (and you will) you are going to double your cost of fixing the drive because they are not cheap. Last if you wire the lock open you will have to be very careful slowing down with the boat. If you slow down to fast the drive will drift behind the boat and when you get slow enough it will allow the drive to slam down.
All of this has happened to me before.
Also I have a buddy that has 7 Volvo 270's and a huge assortment of parts. Shoot me a email through my website below and I will get you in touch with him.

FSN speeks the truth, all that slamming up and down wears things out real fast or breaks them. IF you can't afford to fix it, park it till you can.
What SCAATY is saying is a get home method you can go thru when you are out somewere and want to "Get Home" where you can fix it.
No reason to ruin someone elses day when they have to tow your cheap butts home because things no longer work due to lack of maintenance. When was the last time you tried to row an 85 Trophy 10 miles with a single oar.
