i'm familiar on the purpose of this part. i was replacing u joint and i broke a piece off the retainer yea i know rookie mistake. how important is this piece to be there, there is still allot of teeth to remove this part if needed. i have the merc I-R outdrive that piece that broke off just sits in a rubber ring is there a seal issue.
in the picture the red colour represents the piece broke off

It's very important. With that broken off, the large quad ring seal will not stay in place when you install the drive. Those tangs hold the seal in place, and that quad ring keeps water out of the bellows.
The quad ring is item a in the picture below. Also called rubber gasket.

what is the repair for this or am i screwed i still have the piece and it's a clean brake can it be welded on what's the material made of one person said white metal one said aluminum

Using the correct tool , unscrew the input shat assembly and replace the castle nut

i'm not sure of different names for the part i'm going by my manual it's calling it a bearing retainer so if that's it i need to find a used part? also when i remove the retainer will anything fall out what do i need to watch for

I don't have a clue what manual you have, but it should show that you have to completely disassemble the yoke, and double bearing assembly to replace it. Then you have to reassemble and reset rolling torque. Then be sure you have all the shims back in the proper location.

manual #6 i see the part i'm not questioning you Don S just learning. when i look at the picture it shows how to unscrew it that's my question what happens when you unscrew the retainer will the parts stay in place to screw in new retainer

Nothing will "fall out" read all the way through section 3A of the manual before you do anything else.
