I am trying to replace the U-joint bellows on my 1980's VP 280 SP outdrive. I have looked at many VERY helpful posts on this forum and have heeded the advice of Don S. and will be removing just the upper gear casing to change the bellows. I have downloaded the manual from the "Adults Only" section, I have all my new o-rings ready to go and now I'm STUCK!!
I cannot get the Steering pin OUT! The manual says:
Remove the two screws (1) holding the steering pin
to the upper gear head (2). Using two M6 screws (3)
30 mm or longer, install into the threaded holes of the
steering pin. As the screws are turned in, the steering
pin will be forced out of the steering pin socket and
steering helmet bushing.
As you can see from the picture, I have already busted off 1 M6 bolt in the hole. The holes don't seemed to be threaded M6... I am assuming the bolts are supposed to bottom out thus forcing the pin out. I really don't think they got that far. I had them both in and alternated tightening them... then SNAP!
What do I do now?? The only plan I have is to drill out the busted bolt and try again??...
PLEASE HELP!!!
