I am trying to replace the U-joint bellows on my 1980's VP 280 SP outdrive. I have looked at many VERY helpful posts on this forum and have heeded the advice of Don S. and will be removing just the upper gear casing to change the bellows. I have downloaded the manual from the "Adults Only" section, I have all my new o-rings ready to go and now I'm STUCK!!

I cannot get the Steering pin OUT! The manual says:

Remove the two screws (1) holding the steering pin
to the upper gear head (2). Using two M6 screws (3)
30 mm or longer, install into the threaded holes of the
steering pin. As the screws are turned in, the steering
pin will be forced out of the steering pin socket and
steering helmet bushing.

As you can see from the picture, I have already busted off 1 M6 bolt in the hole. The holes don't seemed to be threaded M6... I am assuming the bolts are supposed to bottom out thus forcing the pin out. I really don't think they got that far. I had them both in and alternated tightening them... then SNAP!

What do I do now?? The only plan I have is to drill out the busted bolt and try again??...

PLEASE HELP!!!

I usually end up with 1\4 20 bolts.
looking at the corrosion, once you get both puller bolts tight against the upper, watch the helmet and you will see it lift slightly, tap around the helemt,oxygen\acetylyne is a very good aid as well.
most likly the pin is hung in the bushing.
aint saltwater great.

Re: Removing Volvo Penta 280 steering pin

Thank you rodbolt!! A little heat, a tap, tap here and a tap tap there and 1/4-20 bolts! That did it!

Now that I have the upper gear casing off the drive Do I need to do something to the universal joints? They are rusty... but limber. Everything seems to move as it should. Should I replace the universals? Lube them somehow?

Thanks again.

Re: Removing Volvo Penta 280 steering pin

Thanks for all your help Rodbolt!

Almost there. Just a couple more questions. I hope I'm not being a pest!

When I put the upper unit back on the rest of the drive, do I deed to put something on the mating surfaces? Permatex? Or do the o-rings do it all?

Also, oil. I can tell by the smell of the oil that I drained from the drive that it had gear oil in it. You know, it smells like the oil that comes out of a manual car transmission. Everything I have read says to use the same oil in the drive as in the engine. What should I do? Gear oil or engine oil as Volvo recommends? Any oil reccomedations for both Drive and motor? I know, I know Amsoil, right? Anything else?

Keep in mind, this is an 1980 something AQ225D with 280 drive. What is the best oil to use?

Thanks again for the guidance!

You can coat the mating surfaces with Permatex 3, aviation gasket sealent.

Engine oil for the 280 single prop. SAE 30.

Re: Removing Volvo Penta 280 steering pin

Thank GOD I found this thread. 1/4 bolt! Manual is WRONG! I have been using M3 and lots of heat, tapping, penatrating fluids to no avail....finally !!
BTW...use a hardend 1/4 20 bolt because they will bend of snap off otherwise.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR INPUT ON THIS!
