I'm looking into buying a 1987 Renken Seamaster 23' walk around cuddy. Does anyone have any knowledge or experiences with this type of boat, either good or bad?

Re: Renken Seamaster

I had the displeasure of using a 20 foot Renken this past summer and it was the worst boat I have ever been on. The construction may be fair but the hull design is bad. This boat would easily nose dive under 3-4 foot waves (due to the very narrow deep V design) I believe. I took it out in some mildly rough seas and it rattled my teeth and took waves over the bow. OK for fresh water but stay off the ocean!!

I use to own a 1987 23 Seamaster, it was okay, but built cheap like Bayliner and a lot of other boats back in the late 80's. The gelcoat and fiberglass cracks and crazes terribly. The floor boxes always had water in them and the pumps for the floor boxes always had to be fixed. You didn't say which engine - i bet 4.3 litre, v6 with cobra drive. The engine is hard to work on in the tight compartment where it sits. To change a start or oil pan you have to pull the engine. The 175 hp is a little light for that boat, a small 8 cyl would be better. The rail stanchions are chrome and don't do well in salt water. There are several of theses boat still around that people have spent time and $ on. I say don't buy one. Look for a used 20 ft Grady Cuddy Cabin you will be better off.

Happy boating!
