I've got a 14' rowboat/trailer/motor combo for sale on CL right now and a guy wants to rent it for the weekend and i was wondering how i would go about doing that so i don't get scammed or something. He is interested in renting the rowboat and trailer for the weekend , i wouldn't even know where to begin. any ideas:confused:

Re: Renting?

Don't rent it out at all.
You would have to verify his insurance, and ability. Then hope he doesn't damage it in some way.

Just not worth it in the long run.

Re: Renting?

He says he wants to rent it for the weekend for his wife whose a film student and needs it for that. Its only valued at around 500$ and he offered 200$ to rent it for the weekend so maybe a deposit of $300 and some paperwork. i mean its only an old rowboat and trailer, and oars its not much to worry about

Re: Renting?

What are you selling it for, $500? Then try this, $500 deposit, $300 back on return of the boat in the same shape it left in. That's a win win....

Re: Renting?

i know the thread you're referring to its just this is a different story since its a rowboat. sure you can dent it up some or even sink it but thats really what the deposit is for. no motor to worry about or fiberglass to get scratched up or anything nice really to get messed up. i have a 14' lund aluminum boat with a 30 horse merc and i would never rent that out.
There was a great thread about this very topic a month ago, and the resounding answer that most of us gave was..."no way in hail would I rent my boat...at any price." Except for its replacement value upfront. Non-refundable.

Normally I'd agree with Silly and Don S, but in this case as you said it's just an old rowboat. I guess my only concern would be personal liability; e.g. someone gets hurt, film equipment gets broken, that sort of nonsense. I'd say secure a deposit, make them waiver up, then let them have at it.

..... he takes it out, has an accident, claims that it was because your equipment was defective and sues you. You put a second mortgage on your home to pay for legal help....... NOT worth it

Tell the guy your boat is for sale and not for rent......

Re: Renting?

smokeonthewater, Then how about he "sells" it to him for $500 and then agrees to "buy" it back for $300 after the weekend? That would take care of all liability issues.

That is exactly what I was thinking... Treat it EXACTLY like a sale. Bill of sale and everything.

Still a gamble.... A judge could easily say it was just a silly way to rent it.... I did think of that but honestly IMHO it just isn't worth it.

There goes that bad internet legal advice again. As long as you don't hide known safety defects, you are OK. Take a chance. If not, do the sale/repurchase. It's a rowboat.

If you want to be safe, have him bring his own trailer--that's where you might have issues.

nah .... that's just friendly advice..... you don't have to be guilty to get sued.

My OPINION is that such a slight monetary gain isn't worth even the VERY SLIGHT risk.

Besides..... you get what you pay for.... want good legal advice? pretty sure there is some sort of business that specializes in giving legal advice
