I have a 12' mirror craft alum. boat that has been painted at least 2 times. I plan to strip it should I repaint it or leave it bare metal. Fresh use only. What kind or paint would work?

Re: repaint or not

doubt you will ever get all the paint off. get to good surface, sand, and clean. i have had good results with $1 can walmart paint, and rustoleum rolled and tipped. these 2 are $1 can spray paint, roughly $20 a boat. the blue boat was the start of the cream, black & red boat.

Re: repaint or not

thanks tashasdaddy
I'm glad you mentioned rustolium. I stripped a boat for a friend a while back but did not paint it he did using rustolium and a spray gun it looks great. I like your red and white job. what about no paint. I got all the paint off the one I stripped using stripper and a power washer. should the bare metal be treated.

Ayuh,.....

When you're looking for a Painted Finish,...
Stripping to the Bare Metal is a Waste of Time, Energy,+ materials.....

As Bare Aluminum has to be Preped,+ Primed with special primers.....
It's Soo much Easier to sand the existing paint to a smooth finish,+ Repaint from there......

Re: repaint or not

there was one guy a while back, that did a swirell finish on his, and then use some type sealer, to help maintain the shine. if not the aluminum is going to oxidize, and look like just ugly old aluminum. painting is much easier, and easier to maintain, using main line paint is also very easy to touch up. if i get a dock rash, i just hand sand the spot and touch it up, no worry about matching color.

Re: repaint or not

as we both said, get down to a good solid base, then just repaint. save the labor and a buck. my little red and white one was a fun boat. i put stick steering at the middle seat with controls, would run 28mph with just me, 1955 15 rude. it was like a little speed boat. i would say i was going fishing just to go out and play in it. sorry i ever sold it.

I agree with both tashasdaddy and Bond-O don't strip it all the way to bare metal. My question is what do you plan to do with the boat? Is it to Fish out of or do you want it for show, pretty, attractive. Is your wife going to ride in it? What do you plan to do with the boat?

If it's for fishing. I had a chrome (I called it) 13 Ft Aluminum boat and caught some fish out of it over about ten years. But it was so Big and heavy (200 LBS) I finally sold it and bought a 12 ft aluminum boat that had been painted but looked terrible. I sanded it smooth but not to bare metal and repainted it. I used Marine Camouflage paint and caught far more fish out of that boat than ever out of the Chrome boat. I had that boat with the same paint job about 20 years. Well I had two back surgeries and decided I couldn't ride in it anymore so I sold it. After about two years. I couldn't stand it any longer living without a boat so I bought another 12 ft Aluminum (Chrome) boat. Boss says right away "Quote "Your not going to paint this new boat like you did the last one, you ruined the other one and this one is so shiny and new. Your not going to paint and ruin it" Unquote"

Well it never got painted. I had it about five years (sure looked pretty) and I caught some fish out of it but not very many. I finally sold it because I couldn't ride in it any longer. I bought my Four Winns Horizon 190 . Guess what I've caught more fish out of the Four Winns in the past three years than I did in both of Chrome boats put together. Probably as many as I did in the Camo Boat. No matter what color you choose. Marine paint will last a lot longer. It is VERY EXPENSIVE probably around $40 a quart but it will last. It looks natural and doesn't reflect the sunlight so Fish aren't spooked. Most paints that aren't Marine Grade will wash off after one or two years. a very short time anyway. Then you wind up sanding and painting all over again. I'd rather be fishing.

Riding and fishing in the Four Winns doesn't cause me back pain either so now and once again I'm one happy fisherman.

Re: repaint or not

thanks for all the replies I just bought 3 12' alum v bottom boats. they all came with trailers and motors etc. (one had 2 motors) 2 mirror craft and 1 sylvan. 2 are factory painted and one is a mess. thats what this thread is about. all the motors have been tank tested and appear to be fine. I have a total of $1800 invested and plan to cherry out these boats for resale. am I wasting my time repainting these boats

No, painting them may not bring you any more money but it will make them more attractive to sell. Curb appeal.
