Repair Crack around Transom

Took the boat to the bay over the weekend when it was extremely low tide at the mouth of the bay. The low unit hit the sand bottom once and I suspect that cracked the fiberglass around the transom due to stress. Does anyone have any idea how to repair it? Can I just get a fiberglass repair kit to patch it up? Or do I need reinforce the fiberglass?

You need to reinforce it but I hate to be the bearer of bad news.

I think your problems are deeper. The sealer around the jack plate ( I think it's a jack plate) tell me that there were leaks. If so, the transom wood may very well be rotten, or rotting. No amount of fiberglass is going to cure that.

Agreed...not good. Looks like a transom rebuild is in order SOON!! Personally I would be very leary of taking that one on the water again until resolved. Better safe than dead! Still lots of time before prime boating season to rebuild...

Actually, I was trying to re-seal the transom. It wasn't leaking, just a bit old seal. so, I took some 3M Adhesive Sealant 4200 to seal around the transom, so it won't leak. Ok, I admit, it wasn't the pretty job done, but it's my first time.

Is there a way I can check if the wood is still good at the transom? It seems to be still pretty solid when I taped around the transom.

What do you mean 'Better safe than dead'? would the outboard just disengage and flown off or something? You're making it sound a bit scary.

I was reading the similar threads below, it said the tailtale sign of rotted transom is brown juice coming out of the hole. any thought?

What everyone is getting at, is running up on a sand bar should have no affect on the transom if it's in good shape, it's designed to handle loads like that. The crack indicates some kind of a problem and it's not possible to tell how much damage there is from one small pic. You'll need to start digging around and remove the motor and bracket to see what needs to be done. Using 4200 around the jack plate won't do much, it's the bolt holes that need to be sealed and that's after all of the needed repairs are done. Do a search on it here and you will find days of reading on transom repair.
