Re: Repair manual for 60 hp mariner - year 83 or 84 and water pump question

Thanks , My manual came in today. Looks like i got everything it says i needed to remove . The motor will be upside down in the morning :) Thru the access hole i can let the pb blaster go down on the shaft . I can see a seal ( black rubber looking ) but can't see the splines at this point should i try to peal away the seal ? Either down so i can cut it out of the way for the pb blaster to into the splines more . My last hope after this is to try heat but i prefer not to try that yet .

I got some good marks on the lower end now so i may try to find a used one somewhere. Where can i find out what years/model lower unit i can use for mine ?

If you can get the rubber slinger seal to move on the DS would work betterfor the PB blaster to get into the splines. There are several motors that share the LU that you have and will work. You'll have to get measurements of the prop dia. and bolt hole spacing to see which ones will fit. I would look into having yours pressure tested to find out if it will hold air pressure and just wherre it is leaking if so before looking for another. LU's are not cheap nowdays and yours might be able to fix. Your motor probbly has a steel DS and not the stainless as newer motors have.

From looking at info in my manual it looks like a LU from some 50, 60, and 70 hp motors will work on yours. Your SR# should be from a late 83 early84 motor from what I have found out. LU'from 1984 to 90 should work.

Lots of mentions of the bolts on the lower unit but but just throwing it out there but have you undone the shift rod that runs down the leg as well ?

That would stop the leg from coming down any further than you have it.

I have not , i was under led to think the shift shaft was splined together . I read some old post where some have taken the rod loose under the carb area but i have not done that , i also think they were on 25 and under motors different year ect. The manual don't mention it either to remove the lower , But iam also disapointed in the manual as it says there is 4 bolts on each side remove and i know there is not .

I can see the splines on driveshaft and they look great , there is NO gunk around them and the area is cleaner then i would have thought .

I have what i think is the same engine/year range as you have outside on a pallet that is for a project.

Having a look at it i cant see adjuster nuts on the outside as i can with an older mercury I have, it appears to be 1 piece.

It leads all the way up to the top under the cowling where there is a arm/level with a roll pin, without pulling mine apart to try it i would assume that its possible that its held on by this upper roll pin, as ive not pulled this apart ever (its only ever sat on said pallet) it may be as simple as knocking that roll pin most of the way through.

If you have someone lift up (or yourself) and get your head up at look at the lever, does moving the leg up and down slide that arm through its positions, if so , its definitly still attached and i would think that roll pin is more than likely the suspect.

I can still change gears at the level the lower unit it dropped down to . I'll check this out after work for sure . Thanks for the idea :)

Re: Repair manual for 60 hp mariner - year 83 or 84 and water pump question

didn't make a difference doing that . However i did gain alittle more today . I tightened it back in place and then redropped it and went to work with the wedges . There is some damage and not even sure if the foot will be usable but with the wedges i am now where the studs are at the end of the threads on the 2 side bolts --- they are dropped down to under the line there - so no nut can even be started ....

I'll keep at it and see if it will drop . I maybe can fix the foot till the water pump goes out again after i get the foot dropped . Either way i could part it out as it does have some good parts ( flywheel , SS prop , switchbox , carbs , and ect .) Ive managed to put my boat on the trailer that the hull and motor where on and sold my old trailer so i have about 150.00 into the motor and controls now .
