HI GUYS I am one of those guys that trys to cut corners when I can. I wanted to get everybodys opinion on if it is better to repair and reupholster my 18 foot open bow or just replace the seats with new? If I reupholster I will do the work myself this would be the second boat I have reupholstered so I have already made alot of the mistakes that costed me fabric last time around. But if I replace the seats they will not match the rest of the vinyl in the boat so there is good points and bad points to both let me know what you all think

What if you use a color or colors to compliment the interior colors you already have in your boat since you can't match what's there.

max!

Max Well if I buy seats I was going to go white problem is the vinyl sides and around the dash and upfront is a off white or really light tan the boat is a 1986 century 2000 18 foot open bow orginal interior. I plan on selling boat in the spring so cost is a big factor for me and it should not look bad or it will be hard to sell.

How about having an upholstery shop recover the seats, bet they could match the color and quality of the origionals. Price could be the deciding factor though

if you are planning on selling it, reduce the price, what it will cost you. let new owner do what he wants.

From what I have seen, the materials used in aftermarket seats, particularly lower end ones, ain't all that. I would buy the vinyl in the color I wanted and do them myself if capable, or pay an expert to do them.

Re: Repair & Reupholster Or Replace

Thanks guys I tried to sell it and let the next owner do it. but the ripped seats seem to be a BIG stumble on all the people that looked at the boat So I have no choice but to do the work boating season is all but over here in ohio and there are few people looking to buy this late in the year. I think since I will have months to do this till spring I will go ahead and reupholster it. Last time I did upholstery in a boat I used the fuzzy back vinyl which is very workable the other kind though is thicker and seems more durable that would be the kind with the grid on the back sorry for the lack of description. What are your thoughts on the fabrics?

If you can sew, you can purchase good marine vinyl for decent money online, add some polyester thread, hidden gimp and premade welting, a couple of number 16 and 18 needles and you're off to the races! Although who am I to talk. I started the interior on my boat, got a quote from the factory for a complete new interior all wood (replaced with composite of course - no rot ever) included and realized that for what an original 3 color interior would cost, I could barely cover materials and time...

Ummm  NO :D it's gone to the boat graveyard

In that 72 SeaSwirl the floor was rotten, foam soaked, stringers where going and the transom had bad spots. The engine was ready to go back in when I broke out the circular saw and found out how bad the hull was, so I hauled it to the landfill. I'm working on an 01 Crestliner rebuild right now.

Sorry no pics, but the interior on the SeaSwirl was constructed with carpeted boxes (4" radiused corners) and foamed seats and seatbacks. Most of the panels were just folded and stapled, but I had to stitch up the rear seat covers and doghouse covers. With the wife's sewing machine, heavy thread and a few hours of stitching I was able to do a nice job on the vinyl. The exposed seat corners were rounded so no folded vinyl corners could be seen, the vinyl was pulled and stretched over the rounded foam corners so ugly folded corners were hidden from sight. Even the boat wasn't much to look at I got compliments at the dock at how good the interior looked (people were probably thinking, what's interior like that doing in a boat like,,, that...)

I think I still have the dog house in the back yard, if so I'll post up a pic of my handy work.

Merit,

When I upholstered my interior 8-10 years ago I visited a few upholstery supply shops and selected a nice off white marine vinyl. Cost was something like $10/yard, and total supplies $200 for the whole interior's vinyl,,, but that was 10 years ago. The upholstery shop had all the supplies I needed. At the end the vinyl was starting to show it's age, but that was after years of use/abuse/wear and tear.

I was thinking about doing a bench seat in the back. Should I buy open cell foam or closed cell foam firm or soft for best wear and water shead.
