I currently have a 120 hp 1988 Johnson outboard. I've had if for 5 years and the top end runs well. Last year I demo'ed the lower end. I just came across a 1994 150hp johnson fast strikeoutboard. My dilema is do I repair my lower end or pick up the used 1994 150 fast strike. Both are relatively same price?? Can anyone advise on reliability of either year motors.... or experience with replacing lower ends on older motors???? what is the general lift span of an outboard?

Trying to make a decision.

Just from what I've read lately, if that Fast-strike 150 has that FICHT system on it, it's a no-no. I would think your '88 120 should have quite a few years left. How often do you use it? Are you an every-day fisherman or just on the weekends. If just on the weekends, that powerhead should outlast 2 or 3 lower units.
Just my opinion which isn't worth much on these big motors especially,:)

Thanks for your feedback. We just run on weekends and only really April to November. Not sure about the FICHT system ... but can find out.

I think that model you are looking at is the FICHT. Check it out closely. If it is, stay clear of it. You may be told that it was updated, fixed, etc. but I wouldn't touch it. That engine you presently own will outlast a FICHT many times over.

If your older motor has been good to you .
i would look into a lower look on ebay.there are quite a few on there .
its just a matter of waiting .till you find the right one.
good luck bennyb

A 94 is not a Ficht (see how paranoid folks can get?). The V4 looper is a great motor but if the choice is between those 2 motors, it's no contest at all. The 60* looper 150. Hands down, no question.

Re: repair vs replace Dilema

If it were me I would fix my older reliable engine.
If memory serves OMC was well into going belly up by 94, I think 98 was when they finally shut the doors, could be off a year or 2.
At the end there they were cutting all the corners they could to increase profits, lots of plastic parts ect.
Talked to a BRP tech after they bought them and he said they speced out parts like cranks ect and pitched half of them cause they were so far out.
I worked for Suncruiser pontoons which was owned by OMC and they shut us down in 95, our plant was newer and one of the few properties that wasn't too poluted to sell.
that is my 2 pennies.

if it is a well maintained motor /the newer one /and will start run and idle
and you can run comp check .and piston stop check for play in rotating assembly . the 150 if carbed will make and excellent motor .
on the other hand a lower is not that hard to find for the 120.
what is left of your lower.

Re: repair vs replace Dilema

So you think the 1994 150 is a better motor?? Any reason?? My thought is that it is newer but I am not mechanically inclined...... All advice is welcomed and appreciated.

Re: repair vs replace Dilema

The 88 120 is a 90* looper and a torque monster. The 94 150 is a 60* looper and still makes a lot of torque but revs up much quicker than the 90* loopers. Both about the same weight. The 60* looper is / was one of - if not the best design OMC came up with. Same controls, same wiring harness, direct swap.

If you're talking about spending the same money to fix the V4 vs buying the (newer) 60* V6, it's a no brainer. Don't simply think it's a difference of a few hp. You'll be amazed.
