Pride and procrastination has kept me from asking since this happened last November. Long story of a day on the river that ended up with a bent skeg. Can this be heated and bent back or am I looking at having to replace it?

That's what I heard at first too Ziggy but then I heard it was fixable. Just wondering how much $ I'm in for either way.

I had the same thing on my old boat and ended up buying a skeg gaurd. I think it was around 100 bucks. Looked good on there.

it is a job for a professional. many have been broken, or worse cases cracked by amature. if not badky bent, and it doesn't affect performance, live with it. the are thousands out there bent.

A skeg can be bent back. Bend it cold using two hammers. You will have to work it in as much as don't think your going to bend it back with one whack. Hammers on both sides, one to support and one to make the bend. I have done it many times with success.

It definitely looks worse than it performs. Didn't know it was in that condition when it happened and I ran the fastest I had ever that day on smooth water, no vibration or any other indication of anything wrong. Thanks for the help ya'll.

You can have this worked on, by a good prop shop, had a skeg welded on my outdrive, by Hood Propeller, in Houston, Tx, it cost me $200.00, they have some very good heat jackets, you just have to drain the oil in the outdrive ( mine was a Volvo 280 ) when there done, if it's just bent alittle, I'd leave it, mine was broken off, by a careless butt head, that worked at a marinia, on the south shore of Lake Conroe

If you choose the Skeggard you will have to straighten the thing anyway, or cut it off. The gard requires a couple of inches of material for it to be bolted to. See the instructions. Like I stated before, a couple of hand sledges, some patience and you will straighten it out. As far as performance, the skeg has no effect. Ran one that broke off with 1/4" of material left for a couple of years until another hit required the lower to be replaced. It basically is a prop guard, but I have a bench with 3 or 4 props that prove it is not worth much for protection.
