I would love to work on it over the winter. I am already getting the fishing itch and winter didn't even start. Unfortunately, it will not fit in my garage. I can put it caddy corner but would have no room to work on it. I am a big freeze baby and don't want to try and do it outside. Besides, I am sure I will need to do some caulking and probably not good to do in the cold weather. If I could find a place close I will definitely pack up the boat, my kerosene heating and do it.

Hi everyone. Well the weather is starting to get a little better in Ohio and I am starting to think about replacing the transom. I am going to use two pieces of marine plywood to replace the existing transom (I figure this is good enough considering the age of the boat and my age, lol). I am going to coat the entire exterior of the plywood with resin. My question is should I coat the inside where the boards are glued together prior to gluing them or would it be better to just glue them together then coat the edges real good? Thanks.

I didn't coat between the two pieces of plywood on my Starcraft when I redid my transom last year. I don't believe it is necessary. By the way if your going to seal it you could just use a good quality exterior grade plywood instead of marine grade.

Thanks Dave. Was it treated Plywood? Did you glue the two pieces together or just screw them together and seal the ends with epoxy?

No it was just ACX exterior grade plywood sealed with spar varnish. 3 coats front and back with 6 total coats on the ends. I glued mine using titebond 3 waterproof wood glue with clamps. You really shouldn't use any treated wood in an aluminum boat. Unless it is sealed really really well. The products used to treat wood if they get wet and leach out onto the aluminum will corode it and eat through it.

Using epoxy on your transom wood will work fine you just have to use uv inhibitors or paint it afterwords.
