Repairing Evinrude electric shift calbe

I have a 1967 40 hp Evinrude with a worn out electric shift cable. I discovered this while replacing the water pump.

Is it possible to replace this cable with the correct gauge wiring and waterproofing the channel is goes through toward the powerhead?

Does anyone have experience with this issue?

I don't see why it wouldn't work, I have seen them spliced and they work OK.
