First, I bought a used boat & it has a lot of chaling & oxidation to the gel coat & in places rough to the touch. I have noticed several messags dealing with this subject, my question is, will the scotchbrite, comet rubbing & polishing compound treatment, be ok to use on my boat. Second, which do you all like keelguard or keelshield, probably not much difference, just wanted an opinion. I'm leaning toward kelguard since it comes in a color closer to my boat color. Thanks.

Re: Repairing Gelcoat When Rough To Touch

Hi John!

I wrote the article on using Scotchbrite pads and Comet cleaner to remove the oxidized layer of gel before polishing. Browse the project I have at shareaproject.com and/or from the link in my signature.

If you have powdery gel coat, it should work well. Just test a small area first. The result of using the Comet/Scotchbrite should be a dull even finish that no longer leaves chalk when you rub your hand on it. Then you can start the polishing.

Other folks prefer wet sanding the gel before polishing. I have done my share of wet sanding, and I found the Comet/Scotchbrite pads routine to be much less effort, does not require attention to sand paper, and gives good results.

Give it a try in a bad area and decide for yourself.

Good luck,

Mark.

PS, Sawblade, that Vertiglass system gives you a plastic scrubber and cleaning solution to use. I have not used the product, but from reading their directions from the website, it sounds like you are doing what I have done with Comet before applying the acrylic clear coat.

Mark, the vertglas system has a scotchbrite scrubber and a gritty compound to remove the oxidation, comet would be a lot cheaper and do the same job I guess. The 3rd step in the vertglas system is a water based clear coat that really does make it shine. I will post pics when I complete the project...I'm well pleased with the results so far. Wish I had known about the comet, might have saved me $65.00
