Repairing hole chafed in oil tank

The inboard (yamaha calls it the sub tank) oil tank on my Yamaha 115ETLK has a hole about the diameter of a pencil chafed throught one top corner. The previous owner repaired it with several strips of duct tape. :^

The plastic that the tank is made out of looks and feels like the same high density polyethylene that my kayak is made of. Nothing much sticks to the 'yak.

Has anyone done this repair? Should I try epoxy and glass cloth or a plastic "welding" kit?

Re: Repairing hole chafed in oil tank

Already looking for one. The assembly from Yamaha is about $300 and the tank alone doesn't seem to have a part number, so I am watching for one on ebay. I would think that a used one would not be hard to find. But I need the tank to troubleshoot the outboard and that open hole creeps me out imagining what contamination could be falling in.

i'll try the epoxy.

Either the epoxy or fiberglass repair kit will work. You will really have to prep the surface well for either application. The epoxy may be a little easier, but the fiberglas seems to hold up better.

If you want the job done right, remove it, clean it thoroughly and then check the yellow pages for a company that does plastic welding. If you are rather handy with tools, you can buy a plastic welding kit for a few bucks and use it for other similar projects.

Great idea silvertip. Our yellow pages show nothing like that and haven't figured out who might do that until I checked the swimmimg pool sales places here and found one with the kits.

That is a good idea. I knew that, for instance, body shops weld plastic parts. I'll try one of them.
