Re: repelling mice during boat storage

Our last house was frequently visited by rats from the nieghbors house. My aunt told me that moth balls would repell the rats so I proceeded to place mothballs about 1 every square foot in the attic and in the garage where I had either seen, heard or found signs of their passing.
The end result....... my house reaked of mothballs and the rats continued to have their nightly parties in my attic.
FYIW- there was nothing in the attic or garage for them to eat. I did manage to catch a few using glue boards. And yes I complained to the old lady next door and even offered to pay for an exterminator to do both our houses at the same time. She refused saying that she was aware of the problem but was afraid her daughters dog would be harmed in some way. I called the city and they said they would look into it but never did. We ended up selling the house and moved to a much better neighborhood but had to give up my project boat due to a lack of storage.

I keep a bowl of antifreeze in my boat, when in storage. If something does get in the boat, it will find the antifreeze and drink it. Then it will die.

I know that this sounds very cruel, but it is the only sure fire way to keep unwanteds out of my boat.

I use Ratsack, a bait that brings on a terminal illness.
Here in the Nursery we can have big problems. Got 11 rats the other week, after they did a grand or 2's damage to my stock.
Got to keep Ratsack away from dogs, as they also like it, with exactly same results.
Don't let it get wet.
That anti-freeze sounds like something I must try.
Cheers
Phillip

Had a similar problem last winter. Couple of squirrels made my boat home. Chewed through a lot of the foam, a couple of vests, and some other stuff. Not sure I want to leave antifreeze laying around.

Anyone use those ultrasonic repellers?

I thought this was how to repell rodents not kill them. Not that I mind but I got a wife at home that is not into that. Gotta keep the peace at home. Are there any ways to do it in non deadly way?

I've heard that anti-freeze is an easy way to go; they just start feeling warm all over, and drift off to sleep ... wait ... nope, sorry, that's freezing to death.

That rat poison they sell at HomeDepot - the green cubes - seems to work at my house. Dehydrates 'em, so they leave in search of water and never make it back alive.

My boat storage yard is home to a pack of feral cats - never seen a sign of any kind of varmint in the boat.

You might also consider dachsunds; amazingly fearless hounds, given their size. Had a pair of 'em once & we received a surprising number of "gifts" in the form of mice, rats, juvenile opposums and even a couple of young mockingbirds left on the back step. The big dog we have now is instant death for rodents, but Rudy & Bob could squeeze in where the big 'uns can't. :D

Re: repelling mice during boat storage

Don't know about repelling mice, but did read about a trap that is supposed to be extremely effective. Need a 5 gallon bucket, a decent sized dowel (big enough for mice to walk across) and an aluminum can.

Drill through the bottom of the can so you can insert the dowel through the bottom hole and the drinking hole in the top. Holes/ dowel should be sized such that the can will spin freely on the dowel.

Attach the dowel across the top of the bucket. You can either drill through the top of the bucket and insert dowel or just secure across the top. Dowel should be secure (not spin). Attach a ramp to the bucket allowing mouse to climb up to one side of the dowel (a stick, piece of 2x4, whatever). Slide the can to the middle of the dowel and put peanut butter on the end of the can opposite the side of the bucket with the ramp.

Mouse climbs up ramp, crosses dowel, steps on can; can spins dumping mouse into the bucket from which he can't escape. You can either fill bucket part way with water, drowning mice, or leave it empty, theoretically creating a live trap from which they can't escape (don't know what you would do with mice at that point though).

This might not solve your problem Big Poppa, but might help others. Read where cabin owners have used this offseason and caught over a dozen mice that would have otherwise been wreaking havoc all winter.

Just be aware that baiting a mousetrap with peanut butter will attract roaches.

If you are a liberal democrat, you should also consider that the right thing to do is to take the bucket full of mice to a competent veteranarian to be spayed/neutered, then released back in the area from which they came.

Alternatively, you could just distribute tiny prophylactics...
:D :D

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm going to use the dryer sheets.

Dont dryer sheets make excellent nesting material.
They dry out very quickly around here.

FWIW, I am going with lots of moth balls. It seeems to work on my storage shed and compact tractor. Haven't found any nests since I've been using them, anyway.

Ever see what happens when a bunch of mice are closed in tight together with no food? It is not nice... they eat each other.... alive.

A campground I used to go to had charcoal brickettes spread around the store. I asked why. They said the charcoal repelled mice. I wonder if a ring of charcoal around the boat would help?

Sounds like if you want to use the bucket trap as a live trap you'd need to check it everyday or put enough food & water in the bottom to keep them alive until you do check it.

Otherwise either use the water method (drown them) or else put the most humane type mouse poison in the bottom of the bucket. I know, thats kind of an oxymoron, but I'm sure some are better than others and I'd check it out if I went that route.
