Want to buy a mediun size alum 8.5 pitch prop but seems is no longer being fabricated, just 8-9 whole numbers. Searched through Internet and found a prop shop in Texas who can repitch 2 down, 2 up sizes from 8.5. Thought that blades had to be chopped down and welded back at a different angle of attack, but no, just need to be bended accordingly. The cost is $ 50.00. Has someone repitched their props and worked right as expected ?

Yes,me on several props .21 to 23 , 19 to 17.now over the last several years and 3 boats and 2 different motors ive been extremely fortunate to have discovered the solas amita 4 blade in 14 x 17 pitch which both me and my rigs have fallen in love with.Of course I have the fortune to have a good friend who is a excellent prop repair guy.

Based on the rule of thumb 1" = 200 rpm ,depending on the hp and boat size.It would seem to me that one or the other 8 or 9 would cover the 8.5.
The application may require more or less pitch outside of the 8.5 parameters. Then there is the possibility a shop might mess up.
There is prop design to different 8.5 will likely produce slightly different rpm and performance numbers. The same goes for an 8 or 9"
Aggressive props are usually expected to test like 1" bigger.
I think its safe to say that 2 different tachs might vary 100 rpm and be considered accurate.

Steelesp?ke,

The 1 less pitch = 150/200 + revs doesn't work on light to medium light boats. My max wot rpm is 5800, with a niner pitch achieving 5750 revs, boat is bit slow to plane with more load and that's with weight evenly distributed on deck, once on plane no issues, can throttle back to maintain good plane speed..

The 8 pitch lighty loaded over revs 6450 rpm at wot, planes much faster including carrying more load too. With a 8.5 pitch prop maintaining same diam, design & cup should achieve right in middle 5750-6450 revs. I'm in pursuit of slight faster hole shot than best top speed, the 8.5 should perform right in middle of the 8 and 9 pitch prop.

Will still over rev lightly loaded, but functional when moving more load, have a Hardline tach installed on my tiller so not an issue checking rpm when speeding lightly loaded or moving more weight. Trimming my engine right at 90? and sitting at the sweet engine transom height has given an extra + 150 revs which love,
