Replace alternator? (automotive)

I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to this, but the yahoo that had sold me the boat ('87 Four Winns 160 Freedom with 3.0 Mercruiser) installed a new reconditioned alternator (7127M-3) shortly before he sold it. Well, the alternator is an automotive alternator-not marine. How important is it that I replace this alternator with a marine model, and do you have any suggestions for what would be the best one for the boat? I found a Sierra 18-5951, which is supposed to fit this boat, for around $120.00. Thank you in advance.

Marine are self contained to be used in a flammable environment where gasoline fumes may be lurking. I would get the right marine one for safety.

Very important safety item in my opinion. And some boats have to have the alternator specific to their wiring scheme. I think yours is not as sensitive to that but other brands and configurations are and need the "extra wires" for their spec.

Yup, open sparks from that alternator will be happy to ignite the gas fumes in the bilge. Get a marine approved unit ASAP.

Thanks, guys. I'll be sure to get one before spring. That's what I though you would say. Is there any concern with a higher output unit? I'm pretty sure the one that came with the boat was 55 amp, the one on it now is a 61 amp (?) unit. The one in the ebay link is listed at 105 amps. Anyone know the quality of the alternator in the ebay link?

In a small boat (about 24-26'), a 55 to 65 amp alternators are standard, 105 is way more than needed for a 16' boat with a single battery, and ebay may not be your best coice for finding an alternator.
