replace head gasket

I have a 1974 35 horse evinrude tha blew the head gasket. I read on the gasket not to use any kind of sealer but I usually use coppercoat when surfaces are pitted or just rough.Would it hurt or should I put the gasketon dry? thanks danny

It isn't supposed to need any thing else .<br /><br /> I usually put a little gasket sealer on mine though.<br /><br /> As long as the head is true as well as block .<br /><br /> You don't need anything else.<br /><br /> If it is pitted , or otherwise damaged .<br /><br /> Its your call, it wont hurt .<br /><br /> But, I dont know if it will correct a pitted etc. head/ block.<br /><br /> Good - Luck,<br /><br /> KYHunter

Don't use copper based products on your outboard. Copper based anti-seize or sealer. Those will hurt. While we're on the subject forget about any silicone based product as well.<br /><br />I never use sealer but most people do, including a number of amatures and pros here who I trust completely. Make sure your head hasn't warped at all and surface if necessary.

Thanks Paul , For the info . on the copper based products.<br /><br /> I have never used them , so wasn't able to reply yes/ no to that.<br /><br /> Though I recall reading in past posts , that it was a no, no .<br /><br /> It was due to a chemical reaction between the copper, aluminum and water . <br /><br /> Wasn't it ? ?<br /><br /> The very thin coating , I use.<br /><br /> Is the brown sealer, with the brush in the lid.<br /><br /> I just call it gasket sealant , its an aftermarket equivalent, to the Oem sealant.<br /><br /> KYHunter

I use the BRP gasket maker or perfect seal.<br /> I also surface the head. if after cleaning the head surface flatness is within spec you dont have to surface them, however its rare I find one that overheated and popped a gasket that did not warp the head.
