Re: Replace Piston Force 1251X9D

my 90 had broken rings in a cylinder that was reading 130+ psi, my other cylinder was showing around 80psi, had broken rings and missing part of the ring lands.

If one ring is broken, Id be replacing them all unless you intend on moving the thing on.

The crack is where the JB Weld is seen. It may have cracked further down into the intake side where it cannot be seen.

Jerry, shot you a PM.
Yes I'm thinking I may have unseen issues with the block. I'll know for sure when I get the exhaust plate back on and drop it in the tank this weekend.

Re: Replace Piston Force 1251X9D

I was very surprised the exhaust plate bolts came right out after all I have read about breaking them off. No corrosion, nothing. And they have never been out! (still paint on em). Go figure.... Anyway, I got everything ready and cleaned up and found they had shipped the wrong gaskets (I don't know what they used to seal these gaskets at the factory but took a while to get it off). Everything looked fine to me, the metal plate is ok and I did not see how it could have been leaking from anywhere??

2 questions;
Where is the best online store for gaskets?
Can I just use regular Permitex gasket sealer on this?

Thanks G

There's quite a few out there. They switched the exhaust plate gaskets design in the 1988 - 1989 time frame. That may be why you are having problems.

They have them right here on IBoats. unfortunately they don't indicate which year or model, they just list a P/N# which is kind of difficult to cross reference.

Here is a site that I've used. Very reasonable prices and pictures of the actual gaskets. Important if you know exactly what you need.
Chrysler Force Exhaust Plate

Here is another site that I've used. Most expensive, but they stock a lot of parts other sites don't. They have parts breakdown diagrams which is helpful.
Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. - POWER HEAD - FORCE 1989 125 H.P. "D" MODELS

Here's another site that I've never actually used. Reasonable prices with pictures of the actual gasket.
Gaskets for Force 4 cylinder

I usually use a very light coating of the Permatex Ultra Grey. Don't over do it as the excess may ooze out and plug something. Never had one leak. The regular Permatex doesn't work as well when I've tried it. Just make sure you clean the areas where the gasket seals really well with some carb cleaner or acetone.

Re: Replace Piston Force 1251X9D

Well, the verdict is in. After new head gasket, new exhaust plate gaskets (no cracks in metal exhaust plate), I still have water getting into the bottom cylinder. Looks like the old crack in the block has spread to other areas (intake side maybe). I've done all I know to find the problem. So, its decision time. Re-power totally or new power head.

Can I swap power heads without removing the entire motor?

Anyone have an extra power head in good shape for sale?

Thank you all for your help with this.

I'm in need of doing this same thing but what are the "rollers"...part of the crankshaft?

The "rollers" are probably the roller bearings on the piston rod caps that connects to the crank pin.
