1974 9.8 HP merc. First: many thanks for the advice and help so far. The thing is running very nicely.

I've noticed the starter rope is looking frayed. It's probably the original. From vague memories of my youth messing with go karts, lawn mowers and mini bikes, I seem to recall that the recoil pull starter can be a BEAR to take apart and reassemble. I'm very reluctant to do this. However, I'd like to replace the rope before it fails. Is this easy and straight forward? I've gotta believe it's easier to do before it breaks than after.

Thanks for any help and advice.

It is easy and straightforward using the Manual, D.

Feeling your way it is downright dangerous.

Thanks. I have factory and Seloc manuals and will probably attempt it this weekend. I appreciate the advice because the degree of difficulty is not always evident when an amateur like myself reads the manual.
