Replace steering cable grease nut

My boat i recently purchased (used) is missing the large nut on the steering cable that appears to hold in the grease. It's appears to be plastic but the bolt was metal. The steering is a little stiff but not sure if I can just replace nut and re grease it or do I have to replace entire cable. If replacement is necessary is it propartary to the motor? Like Johnson motor only uses a certain style cable? I attached photo to hopefully help, thanks as always for any responses.

Appears the part your looking for is part of the steering system. What band is it?

^^^ Think he is asking what brand the steering system is.

They are not proprietary. If you buy new just match the length you have. It should be printed on the cable.

Google Teleflex cable nut and you should find what you are looking for.

Before you buy a new cable remove that one from the motor and clean it up, and in the tube. See if it slides smooth when not attached to the motor. If it does use it.

Like mentioned, get the length off of your old cable, will be printed on it, depending on the age of your rig and you stated steering a little stiff, spend a couple of hundred buck on a new cable. Have a story of a friend who's cable broke, not good. Search No-Feedback steering cable if your outboard is over 50 hp. Not sure you can properly grease the entire length of a steering cable.

As stated above if the cable moves freely after removal of steering from engine then purchase a shotgun cleaning kit for a 20 gauge. Assemble a couple of the rod sections and use a 20 gauge brush to clean the steering tube. Put the cleaning rod in a drill and as you run the brush in and out keep spraying with any product that acts like WD_40. Clean out the residue. If cable is stiff you need to replace it. Odds are you will need to replace helm at the same time which I would recommend since the boat is new to you and you don't know how long this problem has been going on. All the information you need will be stamped on the jacket of the cable at the motor end. You will probably have to remove the cable to see. NOTE: before removing the cable take you had and check to see what's been cable tied to the steering cable, you will need to remove all this before pulling the cable otherwise you'll tear out a lot of wiring in the process.

Hmmm, I thought he was looking for the nut that attaches to the tilt tube on the Port side, to match the one on the starboard side.
That nut, with the oring seal inside, is part of your motor.
Looks like someone removed it long ago.
No need to replace the steering cable if it is still functional.
