I haven't been in the upper of a pre gen II alpha in a while so I could be wrong, but doesn't the upper unit on these drives seal on the part of the gear that has the ID splines those shafts go into? In other words the shiny spot you show is not where the upper unit seals in the gearlube, if I remember correctly.

After looking at a manual it appears they are calling both seals oil seals. I'm sure that I have pressure tested upper units of these drives with the lower off and no shaft in there.

Correct...it would take a failure of both seals in that area to allow oil to leak at that location, but it has happened. The upper seal is the actual oil seal, the lower seal (that rides on the drive shaft) keep water out of the splines.

Ok.. now I'm confused... I'm going to pull the lower drive tomorrow and peek around. I am considering replacing the upper seals since I'm halfway there and have he outdrive apart. We have rain the the forecast the next 5-6 days with scattered thunderstorms. If I were to pull out the upper and lower units... what seals should I order from iboats (I made an account) to have shipped today so I can have them in hand? I know special tools are needed for some operations and I will rent them from the local marine shop. They said they could also order & stock some seals, but I'm going to give iboats some off my $$ for their services throughout this learning experience of mine. I just need to know what would you recommend to replace while the outdrive is out and accessible, even if the seal, cable, bellow, whatever "looks" fine... what should be my plan of attack? Thx!

iboats sells parts. How else do you think they can pay for this site so you can get all the free information?

http://www.iboats.com/Outdrive-Gask...1792775--session_id.419524832--view_id.187586

I had a printout of parts item number and prices from some other website provided to me, but created an iboats account and will order through it since they have been so great. My local marina said they could continue to hook me up as well, but I told them iboats needs to be rewarded as well. Don, please see my post on what should I replace in the upper and lower units, even if they look ok... some folks state "if it ain't broke, leave it alone" while others say "replace this or that while you have it opened up especially if it is an older boat." So confusing. I will buy from iboats what you recommend... even the special tools if needed/recommended by you. Thx for your time!

I did some research and many state that the "usual" culprit is a shaft seal leak when fluid comes out of that peep hole. That hole rests at the bottom of the cavity leading to the shift shaft. Agree?

Re-read posts #5 and #12... Highly recommend a pressure test to find your "smoking gun" and not have to go about replacing things that dont need replacing.

Why are you wanting to fix what is leaking on other peoples drives???????????????

Pressure test YOUR drive, find the leaks and fix YOUR leaks. Fixing things because it's a popular thing to do is silly.
Did you see yesterdays cartoon?

This is what I was getting at, if the op's unit is leaking from where the d-shaft enters the upper unit installing a new shaft (in lower unit or complete lower unit) and lower seal in the upper he will have spent quite a bit of cash and still leak oil. It may temp stop the leak, but won't last since the upper seal is still leaking. The shaft photos above showing the groove are not where the seal that keeps the oil in ride at.

Found the problem while removing the lower drive yesterday...shift shaft seal was torn...see attached pic.. I'm going to replace the water pump assembly while I'm at it.P7200011.jpgP7200019.jpgP7200024.jpg

Be carefull with mixing up those old gaskets from the water pump housing. The new kit will come with several different gaskets, and it makes it much easier to study the old ones orientation for installation, (try not to mix the old ones up), unless your done already..... then disregard that :D

Took the vessel out a few times and absolutely zero gear lube coming out of the peep hole:) A bit of water streams out and that's it. A good feeling!!
