Replace thermostats or not?

I have a 1978 Javelin 85hp. The overheating horn sounded and I shut it down. I pulled the engine's cover and felt the cylinders. The starbbord side was hot. I replaced the cover and fished for a couple of hours. After fishing, I started the engine and all was fine. I have used the boat several times since without overheating. I pulled the engine's cover and felt the cylinders. All seems fine. The tell tale stream is normal. I am guessing that since only one side of the engine was hot that the themostat could have been stuck. Should I replace them or leave well enough alone? Happy holidays, Bert

bertherr

I would replace them, as next time you may not be so fortunate. I know that's probably not what you wanted to hear, but it's the right thing to do at this point. Also, how long has it been since you replaced the water pump?

Re: Replace thermostats or not?

I have the same motor, have not had that problem as of yet.
Sounds like it was stuck, but replacing would be better.
I am having problems after warming up. Running the motor the first few times, runs great, no problem, running at full throttle.
Going back to shore to pick up gear and starting off again.....wont do squat....1/4 throttle, max...boggs out and bucks a little.
New carb kit, cleaned bowls, screens, tank, installed inline filter, replaced failing coil, plugs, still no luck. Have you had this problem?
Just looking for any help?
Maybe coils getting hot....engine runs good at idle, cold starting, but after that starts with one click.
Someone told me about a limit switch? Could this be my lone problem?
Best of luck...jas.....

jasperastro - Try posting as a new thread. You will get a better response and will not be walking on bert.

bertherr

I'd be thinking hard about replacing the water pump also. Going into a 3rd season with it is getting close. Cheap insurance...

Re: Replace thermostats or not?

Thanks everyone. I'll obtain the parts and replace the old ones soon. I'll let you know what I find. Bert
