Replace transom...do it yourselfer?

I bought a 1968 Larson 16ft Fiberglass v-bottom (All American 166). The mechanic has it right now doing some work on it. He has suggested that it is real close to needing a transom. Is this something that a person with some mechanical background would tackle? I had intentions of making this a restoration project--but now am having 2nd thoughts.<br /><br />Has anyone in here replaced a transom?<br /><br />Mike Hugo

Crab Bait (memo to self, gotta get a better screen name) has it right, but I can tell you that the fear factor goes way down after you finally decide the boat is worthless as is and finally start cutting. You might need to do the stringers and floor also...for your search list.

I am in the process of replacing the transom in my 18' Skeeter Fish/Ski, 86 model. SCO is right, once you decide that you can't hurt it anymore than it is you are alot better off. I just got the top removed from mine yesterday (sunday). Happy Mother's Day. My wife really didn't care for her present(a brand new cable come-along).<br />Anyway, I have the top out of the way now and I am going to start cutting out the old transom and floor. I have never done one before so I don't have all the answers or even all the questions yet. I can tell you how mine goes and post pic's if it would help.

Yup do the search! There is a company that sells a pourable cast in place transom kit. Sounds easy but I doubt it's cheap.<br /><br />Good luck.<br /><br />Bob

Yep, sounds like its time to make some wood chips! Put on some ear plugs, or better yet, play your favorite music with headphones, wear some old clothing or a paper suit and take some enjoyment from removing the soaked and rotted wood that has caused misery and sleepless nights?<br /><br />Its demolition time! chainsaw style!<br /><br />ChainSaw Evin

Mike, pick up a copy of West System's book, "Fiberglass Boat Repair & Maintenance", for $2.99. It may scare the bezootie out of ya. You can buy it online from www.westmarine.com.<br /><br />The "pour-in" solutions sound too good to be true. But, maybe.....<br /><br />Aroun' here, we got one rule: When you pick up the chainsaw, you gotta set down your beer.

Hi guys, <br /><br />I like the idea of seacast pourable transom..<br /><br />it should only require one bucket to do mine.. so its not that expensive, in fact it may be cheaper then just buying marine ply..<br /><br />the fun part is getting the old wood out, so I might try a chainsaw, sounds like fun. in my case I don't even have to worry about the transom deforming when I've gotten the wood out, cos the fiberglass is nearly 1cm thick all the way through.. (both inner and outer.)<br /><br />In australian dollars it will probably cost me about $130 for the seacast and lots of elbow grease.. I might later do the stringers as well.. depends what they look like when I get in there..<br /><br />still, one thing at a time.. I would check out www.rotdoctor.com. We've used them before to repair a transom, and it worked like a CHARM. We would still have the boat if the engine hadn't seized up. <br /><br />-Mike
