I used poly resin. Coated both pieces of wood then let dry. 1 layer of CSM and resin then clamp together.

Kinda what protree said..

Dry fit your 2 plys and get ready with clamps, bricks etc.

Resin coat the 2 plys on there bond side with Good poly resin..

When its tacky wet out 1.5 oz mat on one side..then place the other ply direcly over it ( try to place it spot on so you dont move the mat around ).

Then put some weight in the center of your ply..then clamp the outsides ( basically pressure the 2 plys from the center of the wood outward ).

You can put some tape or wax paper on your clamps etc to help debond the tools if they come in contact with the resin.

I do not know if it is advisable but someone posted a jeep sitting on their transom to clamp it. I dont know how they did this without shifting it. Maybe just jacked it up and sat it on it. A little overkill but they said it worked.

lol,,,,,, while there is nothing wrong with a pressure fit of fiberglass a jeep might be overkill.....resin is still a liquid.....there for can squish out......too much and you wont have a strong bond.......the optimal is around 35 % resin...65% glass.
the best we (glassing by hand can hope for is 50/50) 50/50 by the way is fantastic !

to the op.......resin by it self is very brittle and not a good glue....it will work....but a layer of csm between the wood.....and you are very very strong.

Would it not be okay to bond the the sheets of plywood together with a good adhesive like PL? The individual plys of the plywood are glued together. Each ply will be a structural part of the finished transom.

This is the way some OE do it. I have also used this method. I switched to seal each individual part to aid in rot prevention.

I used PL glue and then used a notch trowel to spread it evenly. I then put two screws in it and parked my truck on it. The screws kept it from sliding. Once dry I sanded off the excess, and away I went.

Your overthinking this mate..

The bond you make should be as strong as the layers of glue used in your ply ( And I cant see what PLY your using.. MG cdx..etc.. )

If your bond is better then the ply..then use whatever you want..just use it well ( please dont pull your bronco over your transom ).

YD.

PS. your trans clamps are Very important..and your glass after that...

You can use screws in the middle where you are going to make your cutout, but like everyone else has said clamps & heavy stuff, the guy with the Jeep musta been cheap, he shoulda had a Hummer.

lol.....over thinking this very simple construction project is something we all do....in the early days of boat building... these boats were litterally just slapped togeather with ant old kinda wood. the employees of the factory were either stoned on coffiee or drunk on beer. (the coffiee was used as a cure for a hangover....and there was more coffiee in the shop then there was acetone !)

todays mfgrs are far more professional, controled environments...clean work areas, and with todays budget cut backs...the glassers are 17 year old kids that work for 10 bux an hour !
i will gaurentee, by reading here....you will learn far more than lots of guys on the line know....

yd's comment about the bond being as strong as the wood ply bond is bang on.......and a classic example of how easy it is to over think this art of back yard boat assembly

OK...................? then what's as strong as the original glue in the plys..... poly resin with a layer of mat......or PL troweled? all in all does it really make a difference? encapsulate the whole thing in glass, limit/control ANY hole that goes into this and i would suspect that as long as no water ever gets in there, it will last forever. Now the bond between the hull and the plywood........ different story...

Ayuh,.... Waaay back when I did the transom for my tinny Starcraft Islander,...
I used the Exact Same Glue used to laminate the original plys,...
Resorcinol....(spelling might not be right, spell-checker ain't got the answer)

I laid out sheet 1, slathered on a layer of resorcinol, dropped on piece 2, slathered again, dropped on #3, then sank screws through it at 4" c to c....

After it set-up, I pulled all 2 BaZillion screws, 'n bathed it in boiled lynseed oil for a few days....
It's been in the boat for 10 or 12 years now, 'n looks pretty much Exactly like it did the day I put it there....

So,.... To answer the rest of yer question,....

It's Your boat,... It can be done Any way you want,...
There's Many ways that are the Right Way....
'n only You can make the final Decision... ;)

There are many rights, some work some dont. Ask me how I know. Pl will hold it if it is used correctly. I used resin because I had it on hand, and im cheap.

Re: replace transom on i/o and need info

Hey Bondo, What does the Lynseed oil do? Will it keep paint or resin from sticking afterwards? The reason I ask is because I am fitting some new side panels to one of my many projects and I will like to pretreat the plywood as much as possible before fabric to prevent rot.

After it set-up, I pulled all 2 BaZillion screws, 'n bathed it in boiled lynseed oil for a few days....

Thanks

Ayuh,... It's a tin boat, I used No resin....

Yes, boiled lynseed oil is an old wood preservative...
It's also a paint additive/ component...
