I need to replace the trim sending unit and limit switch on a Merc Alpha 1 outdrive. Is this an "easy" task? I have very good mechanic skills but never have done this before. Does anyone have a step by step plan and will I need any special tools?

It's a pain in the butt to do. for step by step instruction go to the adults only section at the top of the page, click on mercruiser manuals, find your model and download the free repair manual.

big pain in the butt. if your gonna do it, do your bellows too. heres some step by steps.

your gonna need a hinge pin tool and a alignment bar. also a bellows sleeve removal and installation tool if its a gen 2 and a bellows expansion tool. also a torque wrench. 1/4" swivel and a long 1/4" extension.
