Replace VRO with FUEL pump quick question.

Hi, I am replacing my VRO with a Fuel pump.

Its a 1 line Fuel pump so 1, line for fuel in and 1 line for fuel out. The little hole on the back of the fuel pump goes to the hole behind the mount where the crankcase is to provide suction.

Now I have everything pretty much installed but I am not sure what to do with this open hose in the photo. I think its the pulse fitting for the VRO.

I have searched but am finding it hard to understand exactly what I should do with this.

Should I jsut plug it up / close the hose and thats it?

I understand the 2 line fuel pumps have a spot to plug this hose in, but this is a 1 line pump.

So am i correct in that this just needs to be capped?

Thanks

Thanks for the picture! Looks to be later model 3 cylinder. If you can look at pre 1984 3 cylinder to get an idea of what you are facing. You don't have much room to mount a pump in the original location?
Two basic type pumps (many numbers, but only two type) one with pulse line & other that takes pulses thru back of pump. I believe you indicated yours may be this type. On the 3 cylinder you will not have a place to get the pulse without using the pulse hose (previously for VRO) shown in picture. The pump with hole in the back will not work.

Rustywrench Looks like the fuel pump is already installed. (not sure if that's what you meant or not.. )

If pump (yellow arrow) has the hole in that back for the pulse, but there is no hole in the block/cover where it's mounted, then it won't work.

A 3 nozzles (fuel in, fuel out, and pulse) would work if you mounted in the same spot as the current yellow arrow, and routed the line with the blue arrow to the pulse fitting of the pump.

Is that what you meant Rusty??
(Just trying to add a visual in case it helps... :noidea: I apologize if I only confused the issue...)

I did not see the pump mounted. There is no port on the stock mount for the fuel pump. I don't believe this is the stock mount. Originally the fuel pump mounts on a small bracket mounted to the front crankcase half of the block with two screws. If he has it mounted that will be fine if room to put the motor cover on? Pretty close in there. He still has to put the fuel inlet hose on & run the pulse hose to a third leg pump? Hope we cleared that up for him & didn't confuse the issue more. Thanks jbuote.

Make sure you eliminate the pulse limiter for the vro also.

Well after more thinking & looking I have decided this is a 2 cylinder motor. The gentleman does have the right pump (two port) and he can just block off the pulse hose like flyingscot mentions. This motor does have the pulse port built for the pump. Sorry for all of the confusion. Guess that's why we need to always ask for model numbers.

This is a 40HP 1996 Evinrude

When I installed the fuel pump, i removed a screw, between the two mount screws for the crankshaft hole.

At this point I have the pump hooked up, the pump has 1 - in and 1 out. There is no hole for the pulse port.

So now I have everything hooked up and I have a pulse port hose just hanging there.... what do I do with it?

Do i plug it up?... or? thanks.

As I understand it, yes..
Plug that up.
Either remove the hose and cap the port the hose goes on to, or plug the hose.

Yes you need to plug that line. There are 2 ways to do it plug the hose that is there and run the risk of it eventually leaking. Or follow the line and unscrew the pulse limiter and cap it with a brass plug. That is the way I prefer. If you used the original fuel line to the carbs the primer is already teed in

Hi, Thanks for the help.

The primer solenoid I attached right after this post, so its hooked up to the 3rd nipple that is capped in the photo.

Everything seems to work fine. I capped the pulse hose.

The motor is having a major overheating issue atm, and I am not sure why. It overheated last time we went out before this fuel pump swap, but i thought it was just the flywheel not the block. Now the motor starts up, purrs, runs great but the second I make it go fast, it gets VERY VERY hot, VERY fast, around the thermostat / sparkplug gasket area. I also took the thermostat off and tested it in hot water, it seems to be working fine.

The water flow is good and I am not sure what is wrong right now. I tested compression and its 100/100.

This comment is more for another threat but at this moment I have no idea what could be wrong.

Thank you for all the help, didnt expect this many replies.
