I have a 89' OMC 3.0L. I have pulled the sterndrive because of a shifter issue and U-Joint bellow leak. I'm ordering all the parts/kits to fix them. I want to replace the water intake screens on the lower unit. I have found the exploded parts view and have the OEM number #337778 (GLM-21885) Picture link http://bpi.ebasicpower.com/p/GLM21885/

This does not look like the replacement for mine. There is no cut out (hole) in the unit (metal) has shown in the exploded view. http://www.glmmarine.com/OMCVolvoPenta/

It seems like the only way to access it is to pull the drive and remove the lower unit. But before I do that I wanted some advise on how to proceed. I'm assuming I will need to purchase a gasket kit to put the lower unit back on.

Your help will be greatly appreciated. Just trying to get everything in done while I have the drive off.

Thanks,
Bruce

Re: Replace Water Intake Screen

Why are you wanting to replace the screen? It looks fine. The time-to-benefit factor seems very small.

It's the other side. The plastic is brittle. All but one hole is broke out.

I

Unless you boat where there is floating stuff like seaweed and eelgrass in the water I would not bother. I actually had to break mine out because I had barnacles growing on the inside of the screen. This was despite using the anti fouling paint, the boat is moored in salt water. The growth caused the boat to run hotter than normal. I do not have much debris in the water so I broke em out. Keep in mind that neither Merc nor Volvo use screens on their water intakes. I might adapt the OE screen to an outside design that can be removed easily for cleaning.

Btw that screen is for the later OMC lower units, they switched to a better design that can be easily cleaned out. Yours and mine are the older design that makes you split the upper n lower to change it. Not worth it unless you have to get in there to fix the water tube seals.

Re: Replace Water Intake Screen

I have had a problem with my engine overheating as well but only at higher rpms (above 3000). and was told that my screens might be clogged. are there more the just screens on the lowere unit. Any input would be helpful. I just paid $8500 for my boat and used it only twice happened both times. very upset over the matter.

Re: Replace Water Intake Screen

Don't bother fixing.
It actually works better that way(my opinion).
CJ you should start your own thread and someone will help.Alway list the model and serial#s
To fix, the drive needs to be taken apart. The top and bottom needs to be seperated. Not a hard job just messy.
Remember when working on or changing the oil it has to be filled from the side.VERY IMPORTANT!!!!
You both should fill out the profile, location. You might be close to someone who can help.
