Replace wheels when replacing tires?

Have automotive tires on the trailer and the load rating isn't high enough for the boat and trailer weight. I'll be replacing the tires with the correct rating but wondering if people normally replace the wheels as well. There are the white wheels with blue and red pinstripes that you see on trailer tire websites. Some surface rust and some rust between the outer and inner portions of the wheel.

I'm not looking for ways to dispose of excess cash but wondering when to replace wheels as they seem to be a common item sold with the tires.

One reason they sell so many wheels is because some people don't carry a spare. Then when they have a flat they may tow it for many miles, which often ruins the wheel. That sells two tire-wheel packages (one for a spare).

Also, some folks use steel wheels and dip them in salt regularly without flushing them after retrieval. They get ugly fast.

I recently had all four tires replaced under a recall by Tracker. They already had the replacement tires mounted on new wheels when I got there and changed out the whole thing. So I ended up with new tires and wheels.

Kinda Surprised, but happy. :D

The guy I get my tires from sells them to me at a price with galvanized wheels that is only slightly more than buying w/o wheels. I buy with the wheels as the time and expense involved with getting them mounted is worth the extra, and is cheaper overall.

Then I leave the wheels at the curb and some other boater gets a free wheel when I have to make a change.

I know it seems strange, but I have only owned this boat/trailer setup for 2 1/2 years and have replaced 4 tires already, 3 in the 1st year, 1 the 1st day!

It appears that towing a 30' tandem axle trailer is different that a 20' single axle trailer. I really like the right turn curbs! And so does my son.

However, I don't have to worry about sun rot!!

I would say if they look structually sound and aren't leaking any air keep em' however my neighbour bought new wheels and tires for his fifth wheel last year because he needed new tires and it was actually cheaper to buy the tires already on the rims than getting new tires put on his exsisting rims. . . figure that one out. If in doubt about your wheels I would stop by a reputable tire shop or automotive service place and ask them about the condition of your wheels.
