Previous owner had an automotive alternator which I discovered (through this forum input, thanks folks!) so I went to the marine shop and purchased a marine Motorola alternator... Advance Auto took the auto one back and refunded my neighbor ~$60.00, but the marine alternator ran me ~$160.00!!! Better safe than an explosion though;) Now, here's the dilemma. The marine alternator mounted perfectly last evening and I reattached the wires to the positive and negative battery terminals before calling it a night. I woke up this morning and the battery is completed drained. according to the marine shop tech, I was instructed to cut the pigtail connector from the old alternator set-up, and then place the red on one side with the white on the opposite side. The black wire would still connect to the B+ OUTPUT as it was on the previous auto alternator. There is a tan wire (exciter) just laying there and it receives constant juice from the battery as long as the ground wire for the navigation lights is connected to the negative battery terminal. The attached Motorola wiring diagram displays the opposite pole of SENSE as (EXC) and says purple or black ignition. I hooked the white wire from thr pigtail harness to this post. Was I wrong? What exactly is (EXC) mean? Also, what should I do with the tan wire? Basically, what wires goes to which post? In addition, notice the GROUND screw...do I need to run a wire from that screw to the block or is this marine alternator self-grounding? Please see the attached photo for visual reference. I appreciate your assistance and sharing knowledge/experience.

That looks like a Delco 10SI alternator, not a Motorola. What engine (year, HP) are you working on, so someone can find a manual or wiring to help you wire it up correctly. Yes, you want a separate ground from the alt to the block, even through it's self grounding, there might be paint on the block. There's probably a ground wire in the wiring harness for the alt.

The picture was taken with the automotive battery installed and it was a Delco..good call!!! Now i have the marine Motorola and it is EXACTLY set up as the image I attached. I am wondering where the wires from the automotive hookup -red/white pigtail, black wire, and the tan (exciter) wire should go when hooking up yo the marine alternator leads. Thanks for the advice on grounding! Any ideas where I should position the wires? especially the exciter, if needed for this marine Motorola alternator.
