I guess to figure out your problem, I would need 2 different numbers to start with.
1. The SN of your engine
2. The part number of your NEW impeller.

I wondered the same thing. I asked my local dealer if they have sold a bunch lately and he said that shop has not but the fact they are all out of stock is interesting. I cannot accurately measure the rubber impellers but I can tell the 2 new ones and old one are really close to same outside diameter. I see your point about that much wear being highly unlikely though.

Re: replaced impeller, now difficulty priming

I just checked Volvo parts on the partner network (Dealers only) and the raw water pumps for a 1999 5.0L engine are NOT backordered.
This isn't some online search, this is Volvos stock availability to the dealers.
Without some hard numbers here, like SN, part numbers of what you have and what your dealer is saying is Back ordered, I would say your dealer is either giving you bad information, or he knows what engine you have and we don't or you told him what you think you have and he gave you someting different......... who knows, I have watched our parts man do the same thing. Only to find out he was using the wrong engine.
Need to go by SN for proper parts.

Great, your FULL model number is 5.0GL PWTR and the WT is the main part of that. Now, what was the PN of the impeller kit you installed.

The newer one (3862281) is the wrong impeller. The older one (3862567) is the correct one.

I looked around on line and you are 100% right, the new impeller is for 1998 and older . I will take it back to my local dealer. VP sure moves part numbers around a lot, makes it complex to know what is what. I guess that is what you mean by using SN. I will start to use that when ordering parts.

Re: replaced impeller, now difficulty priming

Update: I found a NOS pump, a local guy that salvages boats has some new parts, anyhow he had a pump from when he purchased a parts lot from a dealer going out of business. New pump turned way stiffer, much like pump used to. I took it apart and side by side the wear on the bore was very noticeable on my old pump. As Don said my 2nd new impeller was incorrect and I will exchange it when that dealer opens after the new years. Thanks for everyone's help/advice.
