I apologize for hijack! I originally posted because we were having the same issue but got side tracked. If I can't figure out my own sputtering issue, I will make a new thread.

Again, sorry for the confusion!

No problem man. Could be similar issue. But with the year differences there probably is a few differences. I promise I will post whatever I find or don't find with this. There was little on it, I found another old post I revived just mentioning it but found no hard answers.

Ok good news. Took it to the backed it in, cranked it up and by the time i looked back there it was already pumping a solid stream (literally 1 second) .

Some strange reasin on muffs this motor does not pump right on muffs? I tried 2 different sets of muffs as well, both of which pump solid streams on mg other 60hp and my 150gt ??

Thanks for the suggestions and help. Especially to jakedaawg

No Title

I only run outboards in buckets. Muffs can not tell you if the pump is good.

Ok so I thought I would update as the real reason shows comes to light...

So I ordered the original pump kit like I said and just got time this week to install the parts. When I pulled the thermostat housing off , which was the correct cover and spring, there was no thermostat or associated parts in there. So I ordered all that stuff to go back in. Then hooked the muffs up and would you know it a solid stream !! ;-) So now it pees solid on the muffs and it has the thermostat installed, which answered my suspicion since ideling the head would never get anything but cool. Now it will get to operating temp there as should.

Took it on a quick 10 minute sea trial and all seemed well. Thanks guys for the help.

So in conclusion iF someone is reading old posts about a sputtering telltale it can be caused by a motor missing it's thermostat. Replacing it fixed my problem!!
