replaced points problem

i have a 66 rude 40 hp i replaced the pionts in it today and took it on the water and now she is not running rite in neutral she revs up fin but in forward she does not want to go wot she stays low

Don't take offense to this question because I do not know how knowledgable you are of motors, but did you gap the points? They should be gapped at 0.020.

yep i gapped them and checked them two times i am going to take off the flywheel agian and make sure but i know that i did

Another thought might be you got a hold of ther wrong points. I have never had it happen with marine parts but once the auto parts store gave me the wrong starter for my truck. It looked the same but the pinion gears were differant. Luckly it didn't mess up my flywheel.

Did you check spark? <br />Could have a wire too close to something and it's grounding out.

i fixed the problem was a high low on the shaft was adjusting them wrong thanks guys

Glad to hear it. Sometime these old motors just make you want to throw them overboard.
