If the batttery was low to begin with, that be all you might see right now. They only charge at about 9 amps. Run it for an hour or so and it should come up as the battery takes a charge.

If the battery is partially discharged it may take a while before the volts rise to a more normal reading. In fact if the battery has been taken down to 11.4 volts and especially if it has left at that level of discharge it may well be beyond hope.

It may take more than a fast idle as well.

If the old rectifier was blown as a result of connecting a battery with the polarity reversed it is possible that the stator coil has been damaged so if the trouble persists measure the AC volts going to the rectifier.

I would start by bench charging the battery and confirming that it is still in a serviceable condition.

You have almost a 1v increase so you are probably charging as good as it gets. It will take forever to charge a battery off of this system. The charging systems push very little amps. Take the battery out and charge it first. I'll bet after that your readings will be 13.5-14v, which is good.

Thanks for the info,,,the battery is new, replaced it last year,,,,just thought i shoud have 13 volts or more a fast idle,,,,i think the stator is ok as i have 22 volts at idle on the two leads going to the rectifier and 50 volts at a fast idle on same leads,,i will try charging the battery and see whatt happens,,thanks for the help

These charging systems are not like a regulated high amp car system that will show a big increase in voltage running vs not running. They are unregulated and have to be very low amp to prevent overcharging. Your only likely to see a 1-1.5v increase running vs not running. Therefore if you start with a 11v battery it only likely to show 12-12.5 v when running. Charge the battery to 12v and it will show 13-13.5v when running.

If all you read at the battery is 11.4 volts, you should take it to a battery dealer and have it load tested - even if it's brand new out of the box.
