hey guys,

84 merc 60hp Motor wasn't peeing so I decided to brave it out, pulled the lower unit, replaced the water pump (housing gaskets impeller etc)....

Reinstalled the lower unit, fired it up, and she peed as she should. Then it turns out the shift shaft wasn't aligned. Pulled the lower unit back out, aligned the shift shaft and reinstalled.

This time the shift shaft was fine, prop turned in F/N/R as it should. But now the Tell tale isn't peeing again. Pulled it back apart, impeller and other pump parts seemed fine, reinstalled and again won't pee.

I'm getting good at reinstalling the lower unit, but man, if it isn't one thing its another!!

Make sure the copper tube is going in on the pump housing and as you insert it back up into the motor. Personally to make sure it was connected right was to push it up into the motor first then slid the lower unit up till it slid into the water pump housing.

Thanks!

You know that was my initial concern, the water tube was connected to the upper all along.

I made sure each time the lower portion fit into the pump housing, I don't think that's it.....

Ok well another problem i ran into was that i accidently put the copper tube into the houseing and without knowing it smashed the rubber deal into the copper tube restricting the flow. If the pipe is clear then next unhook the plumbing to the tell tale and like any plumbing make sure the lines are clear...

All this advice is assuming you installed the new water pump correct. Like if you forgot to put the little impeller key back the right way, stuff like that.

I think its all in correct, it worked perfect on the first install, key is in, prop and d shaft spin.

You think the copper tube may be going too far into the waterpump housing, creating a blockage? Sounds like a possibility but the the water pipe looks clear.

If the nuts holding the housing are snug but not tight enough would that cause a problem?

I had a similar problem on my 115 merc. Turned out that the rubber hose coming off the top of the head to the inside connection of the tell-tale was cracked in two places which then caused it to leak inside the motor cover instead of coming out the tell-tale.

Like all fasteners on a Mercury Outboard there are torque values for those bolts on the water pump and on the lower unit. If I were you, I would get a manual if you are going to do your own repairs.
