I replaced the water pump on my 200HP Johnson over the weekend and wanted to thank all the people that post info because I read a lot on this site and it went great. The shift rod is definently the hardest part, but it only took 5 or 6 tries and it went in. I lubed the water tube seal, exaust seal and impeller housing with some silicone lube/sealant (non-hardening) that I had around from assembling pool pumps. After the shift rod was lines up, everything went right together.

A couple questions I have after completing the project?

1. The exhaust gasket looked great going in, but how can I tell if it went in straight? You can't see it past a certain point, but I assumed it went in right?

2. I had is how can you tell if the old one was bad, so I know how long I can go without replacing it? I was told when I bought the boat that the pump was replaced 1 1/2 seasons ago and I ran another 1 1/2 seasons. The pump looked find, rubber was soft, not worn, etc. I'm glad I did for the peace of mind, but want to know when I need to replace it again.

I also bought some new trailer lights from Iboats and replaced all the lights on the trailer. Great complete kit!

Thank you!

Re: Replaced water Pump

This is certainly the place to be to learn how to do that kind of repair work...

1. Have faith.
2. Opinions vary. I don't run mine many hours in a season, in fresh clear water (no sand), and change impellers every 3 years. With a big 200 like you have, I'd probably go to every 2 years since the cooling requirements are more critical and the downside to overheating is more severe.

Re: Replaced water Pump

Also the rubber ages and you just never know when it is going to let loose. There is never a "good" time for that to happen !!
